What is Muscle Tension? How Does it Affect Us? How to Treat it?
“Muscle Tension – refers to the condition in which muscles of the body remain semi-contracted for an extended period. Muscle tension is typically caused by the physiological effects of stress and can lead to episodes of back pain. Stress may change the body’s nervous system by constricting blood vessels and reducing blood flow to the soft tissues, including muscles, tendons, and nerves in the back. This process causes a decrease in oxygen and a buildup of biochemical waste products in the muscles, resulting in muscle tension, spasm, and back pain”
Typically, muscle tension is not something we think about. It usually slips us by, building up day by day. The reason why is that we don’t feel it until it’s too late! For instance, we don’t feel the pain in our body, but we can find signs such as cold hands or feet or a numb feeling we get when you are sitting abnormally or uncomfortably.
This build up of muscle tension may not seem like much now, but can cause many problems down the line. That’s why we need to get to the bottom of this now, while we can still fix it
The muscle tension builds up over time. For example, when you stand up, muscles in your legs and back contract to keep you standing up right. When you lay down those muscles should go back to a relaxed state. The thing is, they become so used to being contracted because we are constantly moving. Even while sitting those muscles are still contracted. Therefore, without proper stretching those muscles will stay in a semi-contracted state, not allowing the body to fully recover. This restricts blood flow, clogs the lymphatic system, blocks nerves, and messes with proper digestion.
Your first thought when pain strikes is to go to your medicine cabinet and get an anti-inflammatory or pain killer. While I am not against these medicines, they are very useful at times, it is only a temporary solution. Here at Healthy4Life Massage, we are about giving you the best life possible, being as healthy as possible. So we do not settle for quick fixes when we can fix the problem permanently.
Our goal is to calm and balance these hormones, which can be accomplished through massage therapy. Massage helps put the body back into balance. We can take the muscles and stretch them out, even beyond the point that you could physically do yourself. I can find and isolate the tension in your muscles and help move it out of your body.
It is my mission to give each patient the attention that they both need and deserve. That’s how I am a little different from your typical massage therapists. Each body is different, so it will vary for each client the amount of time it will take to get everything back to 100%. Trust me, you will be living life happy and healthy! I will be your full time massage therapist. Not just for massage, but for helping you have the healthiest life possible.
So before you have that next migraine, or back ache, or leg cramps, I encourage you to at least give me a call. I am happy to set up a free consultation with you!
